Administrative Medical Assistant
This nine-month program provides students with a working knowledge of medical office procedures, office software, medical terminology, and medical coding and billing to meet the requirements of administrative assistant work in a medical setting. This program can include an externship.

Requirements

  • Introduction to Computers: 3 credits
  • Integrated Software: 3 credits
  • Software Management Programs and  Hardware or Internet, Web Sites and E-Mail Programs: 3 credits
  • Keyboarding I/II : 6 credits
  • Medical Office Procedures: 3 credits
  • Human Relations: 3 credits
  • Medical Terminology I/II: 6 credits
  • First Aid/CPR:1 credit
  • Medical Coding: 3 credits
  • Billing Procedures: 2 credits
  • Business Communication: 3 credits
  • Technical and Business Communication: 3 credits
  • Electives or Externship: 6 credits
    Total: 45 credits

Placement and Career Path
Persons in these positions can, with effort or training, advance to technical or management positions. Job requirements usually include keyboarding of 30 wpm or more, good written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of office software that includes spreadsheets, word processing, scheduling, and communication software. Medical terminology, coding, and billing are requested. People in this field should like working with others, be able to concentrate on details, and be willing to learn new procedures. By the year 2012, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development projects 250 jobs per year in the Medical Records and Health Information Technician and the Medical Secretary areas.
