Health Occupations
This six-month program prepares students with the skills necessary to work as a nursing assistant and/or a home health aide. Students are prepared for work in long-term care, hospitals, assisted-living, and home health care settings. Additional classes are intended to enhance job performance, employability credentials, and employment retention. This program includes an off-site clinical experience.

Requirements

  • Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide: 5 credits
  • First Aid/CPR: 1 credit
  • Intro to Computers: 3 credits
  • Medical Terminology I or Medical Office Procedures: 3 credits
  • Business Math: 3 credits
  • Integrated Software: 3 credits
  • Human Relations: 3 credits
  • Keyboarding I: 3 credits
  • Introduction to Human Services or Life Span Development: 3 credits
  • Business Communication: 3 credits
    Total: 30 credits

Note: The Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Five-week course is also offered for those wanting only the training and testing for state certification.

Placement and Career Path
Persons in these positions can advance their career in a variety of directions, including Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or medical office support positions with effort and additional coursework. In the general area of Health Care Support occupations, an estimated 45,000 people will be working in the Twin Cities area by 2012. Employers typically look for diverse people who work well with others, have adequate written and oral communication skills, and good problem solving abilities. People in this field should be able to concentrate on details, and be willing to follow and to learn new procedures. The ability to lift 50 pounds with no restrictions is often required. This and other closely related fields are expected to provide about 2,000 openings per year in the Twin Cities area through 2012.
