Driven To Independence: Ravo’s Story

Ravo found independence through trucking after completing the CDL program at American Indian OIC’s Takoda Institute. With strong support and determination, he became an owner/operator, gaining financial stability, family balance, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Ravo’s journey into trucking began with a desire for independence. While he enjoyed his role as a supervisor at a fueling company, he felt there was more out there—an opportunity to be his own boss and take control of his career. After doing some research, he attended an informational session at American Indian OIC’s Takoda Institute, where he discovered the tools and confidence he needed to build his own business.

At first, fear was his biggest challenge. The idea of trucking on his own seemed daunting, but with each session, Ravo grew more confident. Career Counselors Brandon and Tressi were always ready to provide guidance, encouragement, and practical support like gas cards to get to training. Financial literacy sessions led by Michael Smith gave him the budgeting and money management skills he needed to feel secure in his next steps.

Ravo started the CDL program on August 20th and completed it just two months later on October 20th. Initially, he had considered working for a company, but after discussing it with his wife, they decided together that starting their own trucking business was the right path. Now, as owner/operator of his own trucking business, Ravo’s handy skills—like changing oil—along with his networking abilities and willingness to learn, have positioned him for success.

Life has improved dramatically. He no longer feels capped by income or stressed about bills. Family life is calmer, and he’s even found a new sense of purpose in his faith, regularly attending church and building community there. Encouraged by his wife’s support and motivated by ambition, Ravo has transformed not just his career, but his whole outlook on life.

When asked about advice for others considering the program, Ravo is clear: “Be consistent. If you’re serious, show up. Be consistent, be there. And you will be successful. Keep on trying. Have faith in yourself.” Looking ahead, Ravo plans to expand his business in the coming years and sees AIOIC as a key part of that future. He encourages friends to take advantage of the programs: “Go to the class and go listen. You’ll find purpose in education and growth in your career.”

Ravo’s story is one of courage, determination, and the transformative power of education and support—showing that with guidance, perseverance, and a little faith, it’s possible to turn ambition into reality.

Every journey toward success looks different, but one thing remains true: with the right support, it’s never too late to start again. Joseph’s story is a powerful example of how determination, guidance, and opportunity can come together to open new doors. Through American Indian OIC’s CDL training program, Joseph found the tools and encouragement he needed to build a more stable and hopeful future.

We’re thrilled to share a success story from our job training program, the Takoda Institute of Higher Education. One recent phlebotomy graduate, Sarah, secured a job in a hospital lab, just two miles from her home. This achievement is especially meaningful as her journey was filled with challenges and self-doubt. During these tough times, her instructor Katie offered unwavering support, helping her recognize her strengths and reassuring her that things would come together – and they did.

Ashley first learned about American Indian OIC’s Takoda programs through word of mouth. Her mother heard about us from her aunt, who then passed the information along to Ashley and her father. At the time, Ashley was working overnight shifts and was uncertain about the direction of her career and was eager for a change.

She decided to enroll in the Takoda Institute’s Warehouse training program, hoping to become certified on as many pieces of small equipment as possible. Her initial goal was to pursue a position in Heavy Equipment Operation, believing our training would provide her with the skills necessary to follow that career path.
