Success Story: Kyla’s Journey

Kyla’s journey is shaped by resilience, determination, and a passion for helping others. As a Youth Career Counselor at American Indian OIC, she is dedicated to empowering participants and connecting them with opportunities to achieve their goals.

Originally from Ontario, Canada, Kyla moved to Minnesota to build a brighter future for her family. After years of traveling back and forth between Canada and the United States, she made the decision to stay permanently, knowing Minnesota offered more opportunities and resources for her children.

Raised by her grandparents, Kyla credits them with giving her a strong foundation and encouraging her to pursue activities like cheerleading, gymnastics, and swimming. Those experiences shaped the way she parents today, emphasizing open communication, compassion, and creating a safe environment where her children feel heard and supported.

While raising her children, Kyla earned her Associate’s degree in Human Services and built a career serving others through human services, foster care, and community programs. Along the way, she experienced a devastating family tragedy that deeply impacted her. After taking time to heal, she returned with an even stronger passion for helping others through difficult moments.

In January 2025, Kyla joined American Indian OIC as a Youth Career Counselor. She enjoys helping participants build resumes, create education and employment plans, and connect with the resources they need to succeed. Having relied on community resources herself while attending college, she understands firsthand how life-changing the right support can be.

Kyla’s journey has taught her the value of resilience, empathy, and community. Today, she uses her experiences to encourage others, reminding every participant she works with that no matter where they start, they have the ability to build a brighter future.
